PAKISTAN FILES COMPLAINT AFTER CONTROVERSIAL DRS DECISION IN BANGLADESH ODI
After a dramatic finish to the one-day international won by the Pakistan national cricket team against the Bangladesh national cricket team, a controversy erupted as Pakistan had filed an official complaint regarding a dubious Decision Review System (DRS) call in the final over.
The incident happened at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur during the final match of the ODI series. Pakistan were batting, needing quick runs to avenge their hopes in the final over.
In the final two balls of the match, a delivery bowled to Shaheen Shah Afridi was initially deemed a wide by on-field umpire. But Bangladesh immediately opted for a review through DRS. Upon reviewing UltraEdge, the third umpire overturned the decision, finding that ball had indeed edged bat.
This key change of fortune weakened Pakistan’s chances of staging the chase. On the very next delivery, Afridi was stumped, Pakistan’s innings concluded and Bangladesh victory sealed.
The Pakistan team management lodged a complaint with the match referee after the match. According to reports, Pakistan feel that Bangladesh players may have watched the replay on the big screen at the stadium before asking for the review which can be against DRS rules. What’s more, they didn’t know whether the review occurred within the 15-second time frame that is permitted for teams.
The dramatic moment aided Bangladesh in a 11-run victory and gave them the ODI series against Pakistan at 2-1.
The controversy has once again raised questions about the use of DRS in cricket, specifically with regards to timing of reviews and availability of stadium replays during pivotal moments in a match.
