T20 World Cup 2026: India Bowls Out of Its Skin and Upstages the Batting
Ahmedabad, Feb 22 — Much was written and talked about India’s firepower in the build-up to the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and its ability to post big totals is what stole pre-tournament discussions but as far as this year’s tournament is concerned, it has been all about host nation’s bowling unit emerging match-winners.
As the tournament commenced, fans and pundits alike thought that India would chase down high scores comfortably due to its strong batting lineup, led by the likes of Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav. After four games in the group stage, though, much of the focus has turned to India’s bowling – which has kept opposition sides well short of even par scores.
The Indian attack has been mixed and cunning in its pace-and-spin equation. Varun Chakravarthy, now the highest wicket-taker for India, has emerged as a consistent performer with his bag of tricks up his sleeve and impressive economy rate. His haul of 9 wickets at a remarkable economy of almost 5.16 is testament to how well he has outclamped batsmen all season.

In seamer Jasprit Bumrah and pacer Arshdeep Singh despite Chakravarthy being the main bowler, two senior regional pacemen have delivered important breakthroughs. Whereas Bumrah’s prowess in nailing yorkers during crunch situations and Arshdeep’s ability to pick wickets early on have often stopped rival sides’ run chases.
Furthermore, all-rounders like Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube have thickened India’s bowling resources. Dube, much-praised for his batting, has also stepped up with the ball at critical times — bowling crucial overs to keep India in the hunt when a tight contest finches.
India:Despite all the praise for their bowlers, India’s batting wears an inconsistent look. Although the likes of Ishan Kishan (176 runs) and Suryakumar Yadav (162 runs) have performed well, there have been instances when the top-order failed to get a good start going against fine bowling attacks in the power plays.
Take the game against the Netherlands, and India reached what was a decent 193/6 on perhaps a trifle rather than demon of a pitch, thanks far more to some gutsy batting from the middle-order rather than any great show with the bat. The bowlers though also reaped dividends as Chakravarthy with a 3/14 turned out to be the of the match performance in it’a own right.
Bowling coach Morne Morkel, who retired from international cricket last year, has been at pains to stress the need for variety in an attack which doesn’t have to rely solely on its batsmen. Morkel’s advice has appeared prescient, forém: teams are targeting India’s middle order more than ever now, employing various strategic misdirections in the bowling onslaught.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav expressed this desire, saing he takes pride in his bowlers. He has repeatedly stressed that even if India scores a moderate total, the skills and ability of their bowlers ensure that they have got an advantage to play around with.
For a team that’s now in Super Eighths with sights firmly set on retaining their World Cup title – it is now established that the bowlers will be instrumental in crunch encounter becomes. If Indian bowlers maintain this form, they could very well make the key difference between defending champions retaining league glory and missing out in pressure games in the closing stage of the competition.
